Cyber attacks on the rise

Tuesday 19 July 2016

Business reliance on third parties is one of the reasons why experts believe that cyberattacks are on the rise for all industries.

IT security professionals have admitted that the range and the volume of the attacks are increasing. Criminals are finding that hacking tools are easier to get and to use, so there are more trying their luck at obtaining data that should be protected.

The research shows that more companies are happy to be open about the attacks they are suffering. This could be one of the reasons why there seems to be more breaches. The growth of public and private cloud usage has led to a stronger focus on the issue of data security and the measures that companies can take to protect themselves.

One IT professional, a security head at a bank, has said that around 90% of companies have admitted to a data security breach while the rest are either not sure that they have suffered a breach or would rather not admit to it.

However, there are those that believe security has become a major priority for most companies, particularly in light of cloud computing adoption. Companies are also wary of the regulations that are being put in place in the UK and the EU, where heavy fines can be levied for breaches.

The use of third party suppliers and vendors is providing the hackers with yet another way into a company’s IT systems.
