The ins and outs of dedicated server hosting

Tuesday 30 July 2013

When you set up your business website, or when you are looking to upgrade your existing site, it is essential that you make sure you have the right hosting service.

Many online businesses prefer to have dedicated server hosting due to the advantages in capacity and server uptime, but there are many other considerations to take into account before you choose a dedicated hosting package.

As has already been hinted at above, the two biggest advantages of using a dedicated server are speed and reliability.  By having a server dedicated to one website the entire bandwidth can be allocated to the running of that site and that makes it quicker than shared hosting solutions.  Your server will only handle your own site, so high traffic volumes to other websites won’t impact on your site, leading to increased reliability and speed.

These are especially important to critical business functions such as e-commerce sites where downtime can impact on the bottom line profits significantly.

Another advantage is security.  As your server only deals with your traffic there is less risk of infection from malware such as viruses and adware.  A dedicated server offers the highest level of defence against these issues.  As a cautionary note this kind of server is less resilient to distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks than cloud hosting solutions, as a cloud host shares the site over various servers, meaning that if one server does become impaired by a DDOS attack another server will just pick up the slack.  While DDOS attacks are increasing, they are not yet a huge concern for most small- or medium-sized businesses.

Dedicated servers do require higher levels of maintenance and technical know how to run than other server options.  It is usually best to get professionals to handle the install.  Businesses should also seriously consider getting service contracts so that IT professionals will handle all maintenance issues, with only designated functions handled by the onsite team.

Dedicated server hosting is usually ideal for companies that have a very high visitor volume to their sites or if they operate a mid- to high-volume e-commerce site.

If you are looking for a dedicated server or you are considering cloud hosting for your business then you should contact CWCS who have been at the leading edge of hosting services for over 15 years.
