Search Engine Optimisation Tips for Beginners

Wednesday 17 November 2010

After putting all that effort into building a website and paying for web hosting, you want to make sure that your creation is seen by as many people as possible. Whether your website is for commercial or personal use, you need your web site to have as much exposure as possible. There are many ways to drive traffic to your website, but the best method is to get your website listed in the organic search results on Google.

Google is by far the most popular search engine on the internet and there are a few simple Search Engine Optimisation tips to get you started in order to help your chances of appearing in Google’s Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs).

  • Keywords Research – It is important to do the correct keyword research into your industry or chosen subject, this will give you the understanding of what your users search for and what keywords to build your site around.
  • Site Structure – Once you have done your research, you need to think about structuring your website around your chosen keywords and start to build relevance between each page on your site and the keyword you are trying to target.
  • Code Structure – You have to make the code on your website as easy as possible for search engines to crawl. The search engine only sees the code behind your website, not the front end which the user sees, so make sure your code is to the latest web standards.
  • Optimising your Images – Page speed is now of great importance to Google’s ranking algorithm, so make sure the file sizes of your images aren’t too big as this will increase the loading time of your site.

Search Engine Optimisation is broken down into two main methods, on-page SEO and off-page SEO. The tips above are some basic on-page SEO methods that you can start to consider at the design and build stage of making your website. In our blog we will be covering more in-depth on-page SEO techniques as well as off-site techniques for beginners and link building strategies in the coming weeks so please come back to read our latest blog entries.
