Public cloud now worth more than $20 billion revenue

Tuesday 29 September 2015

The public cloud is now estimated to be worth more than $20 billion in revenue each quarter.

Experts have said that the most profitable areas for IT companies are IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS. The public cloud market is estimated to be worth around $12 billion and companies that supply data centre services, software, and hardware can generate another $10 billion.

Cloud computing has seen a massive growth within the last 12 months. Services such as IaaS and PaaS have grown by around 50%. SaaS has seen a growth of 29% in the last year. The rest of the IT industry has only seen a growth of 5% year on year, though it should be noted that cloud computing is still very much in the early stages of its life and its growth is expected to continue.

Research has also shown that installation of infrastructure at data centres is the equivalent of a quarter of spending on infrastructure, and that 47% of data centre market is accounted for by digital content companies.

Experts have said that the public cloud sector is dominated by strong growth and big figures for spending, even though there are really only a few global names involved. They have said that there is still a place for the smaller public cloud players – particularly on the service side within a specific area – but the market is actually dominated by the larger players that have the funds to invest in large data centres that can cover large parts of the world.
