Tuesday, 11 August 2009Adapting Your Web Presence for Change and GrowthMonday, 10 August 2009Partners In Performance BoostingMost business people use a website to maximise sales and create interest in products. The temptation, therefore, is to go it alone. After all who knows your merchandise better than yourself? If you consider, however, that a website can look the part and still not function efficiently it becomes clear that this strategy is false economy. Tuesday, 4 August 2009Choosing Web Hosting PackagesCWCS have many web hosting packages to choose from and you may be unsure about which one is right for you and your website? For personal websites and small or start-up businesses, you will probably want to start off with CWCS shared hosting, which comes with several options depending on your needs. If your website is mostly text-based, with a few images, no space-sapping videos or massive monthly traffic, then the Starter Plan will probably suffice, at least at first. There are limits to the amount of monthly data transfer and the web space you are allocated, but for many small sites this kind of web hosting is perfectly adequate. For larger websites, the CWCS Professional Plan could be the right web hosting for you. With a much larger allocation of web space to store the files, images, videos etc which make up your website, you can have a much more multi media website and more traffic. The data transfer allowance and number of mail boxes is also greatly increased. This would be an ideal web hosting package for most small to medium sized businesses. The CWCS shared hosting package which packs the most punch is our Business Plan. This is an option which can cater for larger, busier and more complex websites and everything that comes with that. As with all of our web hosting, whether you think you need shared hosting or are looking at dedicated servers or virtual dedicated servers, our sales and advice team can help you find the right package for your hosting requirements and your budget. Tuesday, 4 August 2009Failover vs Load BalancingIn an ideal world, your applications will be load balanced over several servers to prevent any load issues and downtime due to server crashes and have a failover system identical to the main system which can take over should your main system completely fail or become unreachable. This is however usually very expensive and many companies have to make a choice between having a load balanced system or employing a failover. With failover, you would have two identical systems based in separate physical locations, should the main location or server become unreachable, the second server would take over. This protects you from natural disasters and network/power issues at your primary location. The benefits are that you have guaranteed uptime and virtually no chance of data loss. The draw backs however are that there are few easy ways to employ failover across 2 locations instantly. One of the preferred options is to use domain names to access your applications and make a dns change the instant the main server goes down. This can however cause problems with caching and can also interrupt work which is ongoing. You also have to take into account reverse migrating data back to the main server once it comes up as well as deciding how to take reboots into account. The copying of sensitive data between the two locations would also be best encrypted to avoid it being intercepted. Load balancing usually has an increase in the numbers of points of failure, especially load balancing within 1 data centre (the usual method). If there is a power or network disruption, it can cause the load balancer to fail and thus the cluster becomes unreachable. The advantages however are pretty strong. The replication of data can be much faster and more easily managed if you use the DMZ (De-Militarised Zone) for your main application and database servers. Most load balancers will be much quicker, almost instant, in passing data to the least loaded and available server in the cluster. Another main benefit is for expansion, with failover you have to have 2 identical systems which can both deal with the single load. With load balancing you only need to cope with a little over the single load and can add servers where required should your single load increase.
